Although I am a big fan of Apple's design philosophy, when it comes to mobile phones, I have always cheered for Android due to its flexibility and adaptability.
However, due to various events in recent years (i.a. Snowden's NSA revelations, the Facebook-Cambridge-Analytica scandal or China's civilian surveillance network and its social credit system), the topic of privacy and data sovereignty has gained my attention. That's why I left some of the most popular digital platforms of our time (among others, Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp and Google) and looked for more privacy-friendly alternatives ( e.g. DuckDuckGo, Brave, Qwant, Signal).
Nonetheless, despite the abundance of alternatives that are countering the trend of data exploitation, these apps are still being run on mobile operating systems that facilitate the contrary. This motivated me to look for alternative mobile operating systems for the first time. I came across /e/OS from the /e/ Foundation, which, in my opinion, still has a long way to go to keep up with iOS and googled Android, but in terms of user experience, it is still the best degoogled Android alternative on the market.
The organisation used to be called "eelo" but due to a trademark dispute, they had to switch to /e/. In my attempt to join the /e/ project as a volunteering designer, I started working on some rebranding concepts to show off my skills. My concepts weren't accepted, as they were internally already working on something new, yet it was enough to get accepted. I currently work as a volunteer in the /e/ Cloud team with other designers and software engineers and spend up to 16 hours a month of my free time on this project.
